Electives (Arts, P.E., etc) Projects:
Visual Arts - Global Research Project
_In order to build Global Awareness in the Visual Arts classroom, students completed a mini-research project on a global issue. Rotating through stations, students browsed global topics using the iPad app 7Billion from National Geographic. After researching students communicated their understanding of the global issue through writing (an editorial article) and through visual avenues (a tag cloud, a propoganda poster/Glogster, an abstract sculpture, and a podcast). Students also better understood copyright laws as it applies to their own work and the work of others.

Student Samples:A Glogster on Coral Reefs (Notice how this student has utilized the features of Glogster to make an interesting and persuasive Glog--without copying and pasting information into text boxes!)
Sculpture - CultureGrams
_Using cardboard boxes, students were required to create a global
"landscape" from one location around the world. After each group
selected their location, students used CultureGrams to research more
information about their geographic location and culture. An NCWise Owl alternative to using CultureGrams for research information is the Lands and People Atlas.
Collaboratively, students brainstormed images and ideas that could be
visually used to represent this location and worked to portray them by
building carboard box structures. Click here for the student research handout.

Weight Training - SmartArt
Students used SmartArt in Microsoft Powerpoint to create a pyramid for healthy living. They used class notes to turn their work into a graphic and then printed them for use in the classroom.
Click here for the SmartArt handout. Click here for a SmartArt video tutorial. Weight Training - ThingLink
To demonstrate understanding of a particular muscle and how to strengthen it, students will use ThingLink to make an interactive muscle. With links to YouTube videos demonstrating machines that strengthen the muscle, explanations of how the muscle works, etc.
