Social Studies and Humanities Projects:
World History - Web Evaluation + Blurb Mobile
Students research an innovator during the Middle Ages or Renaissance using quality resources like NCWiseOwl's Encyclopedia Britannica. To build the Information Literacy of web evaluation, students are first assigned one individual to read about from the All About Explorers website and work with their teacher or librarian to identify mistakes based on their background knowledge. As a culminating activity, students complete a slideshow using the iOS app Blurb Mobile using an account created by their teacher. (This assignment formerly was a PhotoStory project.)
Student Samples:Civics and Econ - Politics QR Codes
To build background knowledge on political parties, students completed a 10-question survey determining their political tendencies--Republican, Democrat, or Moderate. Each answer on the survey included a QR codes that students scanned using iPod touches or their own smart phones. Students kept track of how their answers aligned with the different parties. After students completed the survey, they received a short reading assignment explaining the tenants of the political party they favored and a link to read more about the corresponding politician's platform.

Civics and Econ - Review Wikis
Students created INTERACTIVE wikis to review for a final exam.
The focus is to have advanced students embed a PowerPoint and create some kind of interactive game to help peers study for an exam. Student Samples: |
AP Human Geography - Wikis
In a previous year, students created wiki pages with basic information.
This year students were assigned a project to take the existing wiki pages and make them more interactive. Teacher librarians assisted in the project by organizing ways for students to make their wiki page interactive. Click here for the interactivity page. Student Samples:Common Core Connections:
Psychology - Book Fairs + Technology Integration
Students in Psychology visited the library to check out young adult novels selected because of their dealings with emotional and psychological issues. Book talks from the school librarian encouraged students to make appropriate choices that they would be interested in reading. While reading the novels, students were expected to identify the psychology issues that characters in the book experienced. After completing the novels, students researched the psychological issue and learned more about its symptoms, prognosis, treatment, etc. using library e-books and databases. Students returned to the library to hear 4 additional booktalks using technology visuals. Students graded the book talks and ranked the visuals and technologies based on the way the technologies were able to better communicate the message of the book.
As a culminating activity, students prepared book talks and presentations that incorporated one of the technologies shown. Students set up their presentations in the library, and other classes visited the library to hear more about the books, evaluate how well the psychology students presented their issue, and check out books for themselves.
